It has been brought to my attention – not that I actually
missed it – that this blog is dedicated to the Demon Lord series, hence its
name, and therefore I should post about general subjects and those pertaining
to my other series, on my author blog: http://tcsouthwell.blogspot.com.
Demon Lord was the first book I published as a paperback in South Africa in
2006, which is why I built a blog for it, but since then my other series, in
particular The Queen’s Blade, have become more popular.

So I will continue to update this blog whenever I have news
about the Demon Lord series: new books, promotions, etc., but in future I’ll
post all general posts on the author blog. So if you’re following this blog for
updates on all my series, please visit my author blog in future.
with everyone, even though it’s not about Demon Lord. This will be my last
general post here. The Queen’s Blade and Slave Empire – Prophecy, have both been
selected for Apple’s iBookstore promotion, Breakout Books, a major new feature just
launched in the US highlighting several dozen books.

I’m gobsmacked and over the moon about this! I want to thank each and every one
of my fans who has written a great review and made a positive comment about the
books. This is all thanks to you, and I love you all the more for it! Thank
you!

A big thank you to all my fans – I
couldn’t have done it without you! A special thanks to those who left comments on this blog about how much they enjoyed Demon Lord VII - that is so great to hear! To answer the questions posed: yes, I do intend to continue The Broken World one day, and The Cyber Chronicles, too. None of the series are finished, so there are many more books and adventures still to come!

I’m also pleased to add that all my
books are now available from Lulu.com. I’ll be
listing my books with other new distributors during the course of the next few
weeks, so if you have a favourite distributor I’m not already listed with,
please feel free to send me your requests and I’ll see what I can do.

Lastly, to answer the comment left about whether or not Demon Lord contains romance, the answer is yes, most definitely, it has romance in it.

Q.
If you weren’t writing, what would your perfect career choice be?

A. I don’t know, really, since I
don’t like working. It would have to be something else I enjoy, like art, or
perhaps a fighter pilot, since I’m a speed freak. Of course, I’d love to be a
space explorer, but that will have to wait for another lifetime.

Q.
Has your motivation for
writing changed throughout your career, and if so, how?

A. No, not at all. I still write because I love
the stories in my head and want to enjoy them again.

Q. What is the most rewarding
experience you have had and what made it so?

A. It was probably when Demon Lord was first published in SA in
2006, although that turned into something of a nightmare. The first time I held
an actual copy of the book, though, was truly special. Since then, receiving my
first paperback copy of The Queen’s Blade
has been even more rewarding. There’s something amazingly gratifying about seeing my book in print and showing it to my friends and
family.

Q.
Who are your top two favourite authors and why? Do you feel they have
influenced your own writing in any way?

A. Steven R. Donaldson and C. S. Lewis are my all-time favourites, the
former because his Thomas Covenant,
Unbeliever series gripped me totally and transported me into his world, and
the latter because he introduced me to fantasy when I was a child.

Q. When you were in school, did any
of your teachers say anything negative (or positive) about your writing that
stuck in your head, and how did that affect you?

A. A teacher accused me of plagiarism once because, apparently, she
couldn’t believe I had written the essay she marked. I was never able to
convince her otherwise, either; in those days, fifteen-year-olds didn’t argue
with their teachers. So I got an ‘F’ for it, but I knew it was original, so it
didn’t faze me too much. I also won a school prize for English that year, which made up for it somewhat.

Q. Do you sometimes get the
impression that reviewers have written reviews on your books without actually
reading the book first?

A. Yes, I’m convinced the one review I got
for Demon Lord was based purely on
the blurb on the back cover, since the reviewer only commented on what was in
that. More often, I feel that some reviewers don’t understand the book, or see
what they want in it.

Q. If you had to pick between all your characters, who would you rather
have as a friend, and why?

A. I think that would have to be Sabre, because he’s got such a great
personality with a fabulous sense of humour and fun-loving, helpful nature; a
perfect friend. With his abilities, he’d also be mighty useful if I ever needed
help! So would Bane, probably more so, but he’d be less inclined to be helpful.

Q. What’s your worst bad habit?

A. Probably smoking,
but I also have oddball sleeping habits, which tend to be nocturnal.

Q. What advice would you give to any
budding novelist?

A. Write books that you love to read over
and over again, without getting bored with any part of them. Cut out any
boring bits. Always write for your own enjoyment, and
never allow anyone to influence you in a way that detracts from
your stories, in your opinion. Polish your writing until it's as good as you can make it, and, of course, self-publish!

Q. What drives you/makes you
tick?

A. I honestly have no idea, although I’d guess the wish to enjoy my life
makes me do the things I do in order to have fun, like writing books.

Q. When do you expect your next
book, (the eighth book in the Demon Lord
series), to be completed, and what adventures do you take the reader on in this
book?

A. Demon Lord Book eight is
coming along slowly, and I can’t say for sure when it will be finished. Bane is
separated from the rest of his group when he goes to the Underworld
to rescue an archangel and falls into a black trap. They end up in a strange
realm where some of Bane’s powers don’t work, and all he has for backup is the
crippled Majelin. Bane also discovers that archangels are even more irritating
than angels.

Q.
Do you foresee Mirra and Bane ever leading a normal life together?

A. Yes, although perhaps not totally
normal, given his nature, but certainly a close approximation of normality, for
a time, at least. Being what he is, he can make that happen quite easily, by
opting out of his role as a god.

Q.
Where can readers purchase your books?

A. All the e-books are available at
Smashwords.com, Barnes & Noble, Apple, Sony, Kobo, Diesel, Scrollmotion,
Amazon.com and Amazon.uk. They will also soon be converted into apps for cell
phones. In addition, I’m in the process of converting the books to print-on-demand
paperbacks, which will be available at Createspace.com.

I'm happy to announce that Demon Lord VII - Dark Domain, has been published at Smashwords and Amazon. It will become available at all the other retailers, such as Barnes & Noble, Sony, Kobo and Apple within a couple of weeks, when it is distributed by Smashwords.

I struggled with this book due to all the unfortunate distractions and accompanying emotional turmoil, but now that the worst is past I intend to continue with Book VIII, as yet untitled. I have scrapped the When Angels Fall title because it has been used rather a lot by other authors.

Thanks for your support, patience and well wishes, and I hope you all enjoy the book! Buy it here.

Dark Domain

The Demon Lord must face three dark gods, possibly four, in
order to keep the child goddess Kayos has awakened safe. At the same time, he
is beset by the people whose domain Sherinias now rules, who do not believe in
gods. They know all about evil, and have been trying to fight it for centuries,
with dire consequences. Their attempts hamper Bane, however, and place him in
additional danger.

While most try to kill or capture him, others are persuaded
that Bane is not a destroyer and take his side. Sherinias’ world is still in a
great deal of trouble, falling into darkness as its people destroy it with
their careless plunder, and not even Kayos can save it.

The city the people have built in the God Realm just outside
the realm gate makes it difficult to close the portal, which they strive to
keep open, but if it is not closed all manner of gods may enter and put this
dark domain and its child goddess in even greater peril….

Bane followed the path past the gazebo, heading
for the gate hall. The soft, slow chimes continued, louder now that they
approached the source. The gate hall came into view, its massive, diamond-encrusted
pillars swallowed by mist high above. Bane stopped beside a bank of cloud
bushes and studied the hall, within whose dimness glowing runes pulsed around
the giant gateway. A flying vehicle hummed overhead, apparently oblivious to
the gate’s alarm, but then, it remained open. A flicker caught his eye, and he
stared at it. It moved, becoming discernible as a man-shaped figure with
sweeping horns and a bull-like head. A second figure appeared beside it, as if
stepping from another dimension, as angels did. Four shadows twisted and
swirled beyond them. All six skirted on the edge of his vision, barely perceptible.

Mirra released his hand and backed away. One of
the entities vanished and reappeared right in front of Bane, becoming entirely
visible. Curved horns swept from the brow of what appeared to be a muscular, seven-foot-tall
man clad in polished, spiked steel armour over a tattered dark grey kilt, his
face partially obscured by a bull-faced helm. The second creature appeared
beside the first, this one wearing a spiked helm and scale mail over ragged
brown trousers. He had a massive broadsword strapped across his back, and the
first carried a spiked club. They peered at Bane with ink-black eyes, which
flicked past him to Mirra.

Two of the shadows beyond them shot towards Bane,
becoming recognisable. Hellhounds. Bane flung himself at them as they streaked
past, seizing one. He rolled with it in the clouds, the demon beast growling as
his hands locked around its throat. It was impossible to strangle something
that did not breathe, however, and he could not destroy a hound without his
power. A scream from the clouds where Mirra had fled turned his heart to fire,
and he gripped the Hellhound’s head and twisted, ripping it off. Leaping up, he
sprang after the other beast, but something struck him from behind, sending him
rolling into the mist. Mirra screamed again, and Bane raised his head, his
skull ringing and lights dancing in his eyes. The hound circled her, its eyes
aglow, teeth bared, savouring its kill for the benefit of its masters.

Kayos appeared beside Mirra, swept her up and
vanished, leaving the Hellhound snapping at air. Bane slumped, clasping his
pounding head, then became aware of the two beings who stood behind him,
watching him. He turned, frowning. Drevarin appeared in the clouds off to his left,
striding closer, but he stopped several yards away, looking uncertain. Bane
studied the man-shaped creatures, but he had no idea what they were. The
Hellhound whose head he had torn off grew a new one, stood up and returned to
its masters, as did the other one.
Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-43604029806443164182011-11-09T16:03:00.012+02:002013-02-06T14:43:11.138+02:00T C Southwell Books in Paperback Due to popular demand, I'm making all my series available in Print on Demand (PoD) paperbacks, and I've started with my most popular series, The Queen's Blade. The first books of this series are now available to order on CreateSpace. The books will take anything from few days to several weeks to be delivered to you, depending on where in the world you live.

The paperback versions are of course more expensive than e-books, because of the production costs to involved in a printed book, but I've kept the costs to a miminum. The paperback books will suit readers who want a real book and don't enjoy reading on a PC or any of the e-book reading devices. I will eventually make all the series available in paperback.
I have received numerous queries about Demon Lord Book VII - Dark Domain, which I am currently working on. It has experienced several unforeseen and unfortunate delays due to family crises and tragedies, and it is still on-going. I no longer want to give a certain deadline for its completion, although I will still say tentatively May. The way I work, any distractions tend to throw me off and set me back, and that's exactly what has happened. The book is 90% complete now, but the final chapter is proving hard to write with all the unhappy events that have happened and are still happening.

I hope to be able to get back into the 'channel' soon, and wrap up this episode of the story so I can publish it. I do not want to rush it or force it, however, as that will produce an inferior product. So, I apologise to all of you who are waiting for the book and all I can say is: it's my current project and I'm doing my best to have it finished as soon as possible. When I do, I shall notify all those who have emailed me and post notices here on the blog and on Facebook to let everyone know that it is available and where - it will be available first on Smashwords and Amazon.Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-3601814267680892162011-07-29T20:12:00.002+02:002011-07-29T20:27:52.775+02:00Now Publishing as Paperbacks at Create SpaceI have decided to publish all my books as paperbacks at Create Space, and I have set up The Queen's Blade there already. I'm just waiting for the proof copy, which will take about a month to be delivered, and, once I give the go-ahead, that will be the first book to be published. After that I intend to publish the rest of The Queen's Blade series first, then do The Cyber Chronicles, Demon Lord, Slave Empire and Broken World.

I've received numerous e-mails asking for paperback versions of the e-books, and it will be wonderful for me to have actual physical copies of all my books - a dream I've had for a very long time! I shall also order extra copies and see if I can't sell a few in South Africa. Ironically, my own country is the one place where I have made no sales. South Africans don't buy e-books, it seems, or at least, very few, and I hope to persuade a few Cape Town book shops to sell copies.

I've already set up the entire Queen's Blade series according to Create Space's guidelines, and it has been an easy process, simple and quick. I'm impressed with the service there so far. The biggest delay is the postage time, but after I receive the proofs at the end of September things should go quickly.Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-13207074075985889892011-05-19T20:23:00.001+02:002011-05-19T20:26:41.935+02:00Now Publishing on AmazonI have started publishing my books on Amazon.com, as well as the UK and German branches, now that the pirate who was selling my free books there has been defeated. So far, I have published 24 books, and I’ll be adding the rest very soon. I have completed publishing the entire Queen’s Blade series there, including the two prequels, Dead Son and God Touched, and also the Broken World series and the Slave Empire trilogy.

I have also published the first three books in the Demon Lord series, Demon Lord, Dark God and Grey God, the rest to follow soon, and the first four books of the Cyber Chronicles, up to Cyborg. I will be adding the rest of that series soon, too.

So for those of you who read my previous posts about the pirated books, please be assured, all these books are legitimate and legal. Thank you to all those who emailed me, concerned that the pirate had got hold of all my books. Thankfully this is not the case, and now he can’t steal them since I have published them on Amazon myself.Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-47295789161670707312011-04-30T07:25:00.004+02:002011-04-30T07:56:23.023+02:00Amazon Pirates DefeatedGood news! The pirated copies of The Cyber Chronicles - Queen of Arlin, and Slave Empire - Prophecy, have been taken down on Amazon.com. Although the staff at Amazon did not respond to my emails regarding this matter, the message evidently got through this time. I'd like to thank everyone who sent emails or made comments on the site, which undoubtedly led to the pirated books being removed.

These books are both available for free on Smashwords.com and it's a sad day when pirates try to make money out of other people's work. A special thanks to Tracy Falbe, who went the extra mile to email Amazon and added reviews warning people about the books being pirated copies. Thanks Tracy! Visit Tracy's site http://www.falbepublishing.com/braveluck/index.html and get a free copy of the first book of her epic fantasy series Union of Renegades.

I hope one day my books will be available on Amazon, but at the moment Smashwords has a technical difficulty with this. Other news is I have now published the rest of The Cyber Chronicles series, Book IV, Cyborg, Book V, Overlord, Book VI, Warrior Breed, Book VII, Sabre, Book VIII, Scorpion Lord and Book IX, Precipice, and they're available on Smashwords.com. You can find them all here: http://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/TCSouthwell. They should be distributed to the other retailers within the next few weeks.

I am now working on Book VII of the Demon Lord series, which is tentatively titled Beast God.Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-83615722837925954782011-04-15T09:17:00.002+02:002011-04-15T09:22:07.318+02:00Pirates on AmazonI have recently discovered that two of my free books, Slave Empire – Prophecy and The Cyber Chronicles – Queen of Arlin, have been pirated and are being sold on Amazon.com. I have contacted the relevant department – piracy procurement, apparently – at Amazon and been roundly ignored.

They evidently don’t see the need to protect authors’ copyrights – well why should they when they’re making a cut of the pirate’s profits? They demand that I jump through a whole bunch of red tape hoops to prove I am the author of these books, when they clearly didn’t make the pirate jump through any, or he wouldn’t have been able to pirate my books in the first place.

If people are buying these books at exorbitant prices – $6.99 for Queen of Arlin and $3.20 for Prophecy – they are being resoundingly ripped off, as both these books are free on Smashwords.com. I’m unable to comment on this situation on Amazon, due to the fact that I’ve never bought anything there.

So if anyone would like to help, and has bought stuff on Amazon, please leave comments stating that these pirated books are copyright infringements. Just do a search on Amazon for ‘T C Southwell’ and the two books will pop right up. Thanks to all who help!Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-27301831896176374932011-02-23T06:45:00.004+02:002011-02-25T10:21:46.441+02:00New Review of Demon Lord and Interview with the AuthorTracy Falbe, author of The Rys Chronicles fantasy series and owner of Her Ladyship's Quest blog, has written a stunning review of Demon Lord, which is available on the blog. I hope you'll read the free first books and decide for yourself, and please post a review and a grading for me if you have a moment!

I still have a few more books to publish, too, and I'll keep you up to date on the blog, so check back! Below is an excerpt from Grey God. I'll publish excerpts from the others soon, too.

******

Kayos' yell woke Bane at the same moment that the hut's door imploded with a terrific bang. He rolled off the couch, landing on his feet. A monstrous fire demon in man form charged in and sliced the couch in two with a curved scimitar, making Bane glad he had quit it. He directed a lash of power at it, and it exploded in a blaze of bright fire, then he spun, his hands raised. Kayos held two earth demons in true form at bay with a shield of blinding white fire, which made their fists crumble to dust when they struck it.

Mirra cowered in the furthest corner, her wide eyes filled with shock and terror. Mithran and Grem guarded her with drawn swords, their expressions grim and scared. The demons ignored the little group, intent on Bane and Kayos.
"Get out of here!" Bane shouted.

Grem turned to smash through the window behind them, taking Mirra's wrist to help her scramble through it. Bane swung around. The Naribis stood just outside the door, directing the demons, a goddess at his side. His eyes lingered on Kayos, sparing Bane an occasional hard-eyed look. The goddess had a cold, reptilian beauty, bright red hair piled atop her head, a slight smirk curling her thin lips. Bane glanced around at the empty corner to assure himself the trio was safe before turning to face the Narabis again.

Conjuring a sword, he destroyed the cabin wall with a blast of shadow and leapt at the Naribis, but two fire demons charged forward to protect their master. Bane destroyed one with a bolt of dark fire, then the other hit his shields with incandescent eyes. Two more earth demons shot up, and Bane dropped the sword to direct a lash of fire at them. They slumped to scattered soil, and he turned to the fire demon as three more stepped from the fire the Naribis had lighted outside the hut.

One of the earth demons that pounded on Kayos' shield crumbled, but two more rose behind him. He spun and smashed them back with his shield, chunks of soil crumbling from them. Bane drew power from the shadows and sent it at the fire demons with a sweep of his arms, extinguishing them, but more stepped from the flames to replace them. Bane knew that as long as the Naribis remained unchallenged he would continue to summon demons, of which he had a vast supply.

The dark power whispered names in Bane's mind, and he spoke the words of summoning. The demon that stepped from the Naribis' fire attacked the dark god at Bane's command, and the Naribis destroyed it as Bane summoned another. An earth demon quit the battle with Kayos to attack Bane, sending him staggering with a glancing blow as he leapt aside. He destroyed it, but more rose all around him. Diving between them, he scooped up his sword and charged the Naribis, who conjured a weapon and met Bane's blade with scything stroke that showered him with fat yellow sparks.

The goddess summoned demons in his place, and Bane unleashed a swathe of unfocused dark power to cut them down as his sword clashed with the Naribis' again. The hut burst into flames, as did several dead trees nearby, causing a twinge of concern to go through Bane as he wondered if Mirra, Grem and Mithran were far enough away, or behind cover.

The goddess' presence angered him. She was an added danger he did not need. One god was bad enough, two were overwhelming. He whipped around and sliced off one of her arms. She shrieked and staggered back, her face twisted with rage. Bane spun and struck at the Naribis again, forcing him to jump back as the sword slashed under his weapon and opened a deep gash in his droge body.

Bane spoke the words of summoning, and two earth demons rose to attack the goddess. She destroyed one, but the other sent her sprawling with a scream of fury. Bane summoned two more and sent them at the Naribis, who spun to destroy them. Bane thrust his sword into the Naribis' back, unleashing a swathe of fire as two demons rose behind him.

The Naribis howled and turned, causing the sword to slice through him, almost cutting him in two. He stabbed his weapon into Bane's side, and the Demon Lord grunted, doubling over before he jerked his weapon free and sliced off the Naribis' arms. The Naribis staggered back, his arms regenerating. The goddess had also replaced her arm, and continued to summon demons.

The Demon Lord glanced at Kayos, who held three earth demons at bay, and did not seem to be in too much trouble. The hut's rotten timbers burnt fiercely. Bane glanced down at the sword protruding from his flank, gripped it and pulled it out. Blood soaked his shirt as he leapt at the Naribis again, his sword scything towards his foe's throat. The dark god conjured another weapon to meet Bane's stroke, and he destroyed the three earth demons that attacked him from behind with a pulse of dark fire.

Again he spun and slashed at the goddess, almost cutting her in half. She fell with a shriek, crawling away as the Naribis attacked Bane from behind. He turned in time to deflect a blow aimed at his neck, speaking the words of summoning again. Fire demons stepped from the flames to attack the Naribis with burning eyes and fiery fists. He destroyed them, then leapt at Bane, who parried his strokes and countered with some of his own, forcing the Naribis to jump aside. Changing tactics, Bane summoned tons of lava from deep within the earth and dumped it on the Naribis and his goddess. They shouted the word of power as it engulfed them, and their momentary imprisonment gave Bane time to destroy the rest of their demons.

The Naribis emerged first, and Bane chopped off his head. He sprouted a new one, and his droge form protected him from the dull sunlight that probed through the forest roof. Bane burnt part the dark god's newly formed face away, and the Naribis howled. His goddess, who had freed herself, vanished.Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-42877053570092666832010-12-29T04:41:00.006+02:002010-12-29T04:57:06.854+02:00New E-book Series PublishedI have now published the first book of all five of my fantasy and sci-fi series, as well as the third book of the Demon Lord series, Grey God. Good news! Demon Lord and Dark God have just been published as e-books on Smashwords, and Demon Lord is a free download, so anyone can get a copy. Then, if you want, Dark God is available at a small cost. I will soon be publishing the third book in the series, Grey God, followed by the rest of these books, which include God Realm, Dark Domain and many more. Having found this excellent avenue to publish my books, I will also be publishing my other fantasy and sci-fi series there very soon.

I feel that it's important for potential buyers to be able to read the first book in each series for free, then decide whether or not they want to continue reading the series, since most of my fantasy and sci-fi series are rather long - between four and ten books.

After the frustrating time I've had trying to find somewhere to publish my books, it's a relief to finally find a place that offers and excellent service to authors. Please go along and get the free books, and keep checking for the other series I'll soon publish, which you'll find listed when you click on any of my books on Smashwords. I will also announce the launch of the various series here, and on my site, which I'm currently building and should be finished soon.Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-1813690007141890792010-08-29T06:46:00.002+02:002010-08-29T07:01:33.180+02:00Sales of E-books StoppedThe payment portal company I was using to handle online payments has made it impossible for me to withdraw funds, so I have been forced to remove the sales links for Demon Lord and Dark God. I shall endeavour to find another payment portal company that will handle my online sales, but until then I can no longer sell online, and I have lost the payments I received previously.

Still, my struggle to publish my books continues. With a further 20-odd books still awaiting publication, the mission grows arduous. There seems no end to the obstacles I'm encountering on this journey, which are making even self-publishing seem impossible. Hopefully, I shall find a way to do it eventually.Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-39886410790154213062010-02-20T03:27:00.004+02:002010-02-20T06:10:57.247+02:00E-book Purchasing InstructionsAt last, Demon Lord and Dark God are available as ebooks! I've searched high and low for an ebook site that will compile my books into ebooks - not an ebook publisher, because they just want to change them too much - and have come up empty.

These ebooks are EXE files, so they cannot be emailed, but it's a simple matter to download them. I have tried to find a way to produce secure PDF files, but have failed. Apart from purchasing the Adobe Distiller programme, which I can't afford to do, there's just no way to do it. So all I could find is a free ebook compiler.

Sorry, but yes, it has a notice that pops up between pages to tell you it's an unregistered version of the ebook compiler - in other words, it's a demo copy! Best I could do, though, being penniless. If I sell enough books, I'll be able to afford to buy some proper ebook compiler software! Then everyone who got a copy of this version will get a copy of the proper version, for free.

All you do is click the 'Buy Now' button, and follow the instructions to pay for the ebook. Once you've made your purchase, email me (contact author link) and let me know you've bought a copy, and I will check in my Monsterpay account. If the cash is in, I'll send you a URL where you can download the ebook.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-4428479653844744172009-10-01T06:47:00.003+02:002009-10-01T06:55:55.776+02:00Dark God as an E-book - Coming Soon!

I just found two comments that I had no idea were made some time ago. The blog email address was out of date, so I didn’t receive a notification about these comments. Since I have no way of contacting you, I’ll reply to you right here on the blog and hope you visit again soon.

Heatwave: People do read sci-fi fantasy books, but whether or not Lulu.com is a rip-off I have no idea.

VampireBookHunter: I’m so glad you enjoyed the book, and the cult sounds awesome. The sequel is going to be published as an e-book very soon; I just have to work out a few wrinkles in the process.

I have corrected the comment email address now, so I’ll be notified of future comments and hopefully I can reply to those who leave them. If not, please make use of my email address on the blog to contact me. I’m always happy to hear from people who have enjoyed my books. I am currently taking steps to create a PDF e-book that I can send to anyone who wants to purchase it via the purchase link on the blog. I have also created an alternative EXE standalone file that can be downloaded from a secret page whose link I shall give to those who want it, since I can’t email it.

I have been forced to do this after approaching several e-book publishers, one of which wouldn’t publish a previously published book, and the other wanted to make changes that I found unacceptable. Others gave me the run around or just looked tacky! One, when I asked what format they used for their e-books, was so rude I hope I never have the misfortune encounter them again! Obviously I have to publish Demon Lord as an e-book first if I go the publisher route, since otherwise those who haven’t read Demon Lord won’t be able to buy it. No sense in publishing the sequel without the first book. For those who have read the paperback version of Demon Lord, however, I can offer the sequel, Dark God, here on my blog, and also Demon Lord, for those who haven’t read it as a paperback.

This seems to be the only way of circumventing the frustrating world of publishers and allowing those who want to, to read Dark God. I shall notify all those who wrote to me when the e-books are ready, and anyone else who is waiting for Dark God – keep checking here, now that I’ve given up trying to use an e-book publisher, it’s going to happen soon! Watch this space!
Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-7573105942310530402008-09-06T02:01:00.003+02:002008-09-06T02:27:53.620+02:00Demon Lord sequel "Dark God" to be published as an e-book

The idea of publishing Dark God as a POD publication was a good one, I still feel, but as it turns out, not so easily achieved. Truth be told, I have been warned not to do this, since it may spoil the book’s chances of ever being published as a paperback. In view of this, I am now considering another Internet option - an e-book. This is by far the cheapest option for people who want to buy the book, and the easiest to organise, since it only requires a bit of software and a little time. It’s probably the quickest and simplest solution, and I only hope that those who have written to me asking about Dark God’s publication will be happy to read it in an e-book format. For those who don’t enjoy reading a great deal on the screen, there is the option to print it out.

It’s not ideal, but in the circumstances, it will help to solve the problem until the book is published, which will happen in the near future, I hope. As soon as I have compiled Dark God into an e-book, I will notify all the people who have emailed me to ask about it. I will also publish the first few chapters here on the blog. My agent has recommended that I use this option, and I always listen to her advice. So, for those who are patiently waiting for Dark God, your wait will soon be over.
Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-1557648656619945482008-06-25T05:55:00.003+02:002008-08-25T00:05:57.901+02:00Dark God Will Be Published As Print On Demand I'm pleased to announce that, due to the number of emails I have received requesting a copy of the sequel to Demon Lord, Dark God, I have decided to make the book available as a POD (Print On Demand). I haven't yet chosen a POD publisher, but I'm looking for the right one. Dark God is now in final proofing, and will be submitted for publication shortly - I hope within the next month or so.

Once it's available on the POD site, I shall publish the URL where it can be ordered, and you'll be able to order it here too. POD publishing does entail somewhat of a delay, since the book will only be printed once your order has been received, so unfortunately you can expect to wait for up to six weeks. I will, however, be ordering a number of copies for my own reselling purposes, and these will be sent out more quickly. Signed copies will also be available.

I shall post progress reports here as the publication process unfolds. Pre-publication reviews will be published in several sites and online magazines whose names and URLs I shall also post here when the review has been accepted, along with the date that it will be available.

Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-31448719014979316852008-05-04T05:37:00.003+02:002008-05-04T05:44:44.713+02:00Writing Tips

A lot of writers have this misconception that writing fiction must be 'artsy' or 'different'. Sure, you need to be clear and use evocative descriptive prose, but the writing should be normal and easy to read, in my opinion. You should write your stories in a ‘normal’ writing style - with some more evocative descriptive prose.

I've never tried to use 'another voice', so I guess my fiction writing style is boring or whatever, but I think it's more important to paint a clear picture in your reader's mind so that they enjoy the story. That is, after all, the whole point, if you want to be published, isn't it? I use a larger vocabulary for fiction writing, that's all, and only because using evocative words will make my descriptions as vivid as possible.

The more vivid the image you can instil in your reader's mind, the better. If you muddy your descriptions with strange grammar and odd words, it lessens your reader's enjoyment of the story, and the story is what you're trying to get across.

If your reader has to read a sentence 2 or 3 times before they can figure out what it means, they're not enjoying the story as much. Sure, it's crystal clear to you, because you wrote it, but even my writing, which is as simple and straightforward as I can make it, is sometimes misunderstood. Leave the weird stuff to the poets.
Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-27219300070880398882008-01-28T01:06:00.000+02:002008-01-28T01:21:29.905+02:00Demon Lord Sequel Publication Postponed

A letter from T C Southwell

It is with deep regret that I must announce the indefinite postponement of the publication of the “Demon Lord” sequel, “Dark God”. Unfortunately, due to the poor sales of “Demon Lord”, it now seems highly unlikely that the sequel will be published. There was an amazing lack of publicity for “Demon Lord”, since all the magazines and most of the newspapers to whom the book was sent for review declined to review it or even read it, but dismissed it either as a ‘demonic handbook’, or ‘local rubbish’. The fact that it was written and published locally caused an intense bias towards it, believe it or not.

Not only were the local press disinclined to review it, but major South African bookshops would not even order it from the publisher, despite public demand. Against these kinds of odds, the book was doomed from the outset. I am now seeking an overseas publisher, and will, hopefully, find more support in other countries. It is a sad state of affairs, and I would like to apologise to all my fans. I am considering sending the book to a Print On Demand (POD) publisher for the sake of my readers while I endeavour to find an overseas publisher for "Dark God". This is now somewhat complicated by the fact that “Demon Lord” has already been published in South Africa, and therefore the only option might be to combine the two books for the overseas market.

I have been deeply touched by all those of you who have written to me, and extremely sad that this has come about. I hope that you will find it in your hearts to be patient, and I will do my best to find a way to have the sequel published, either on POD or as an e-book, for the sake of my fans.
Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-75341327016168360042008-01-14T18:30:00.000+02:002008-01-28T01:22:32.601+02:00

Only a young healer stands between a dark god and the destruction of the Overworld...

When the dark god Arkonen, imprisoned in the Underworld for a millennia, learns the secret of his release, he steals a mortal woman, heavy with child, from the Overworld, and rips the infant from her womb. This begs the question, are South African bookshops anti South African? While the rest of the business industry in South Africa tries to promote local products with the “Proudly South African” campaign, local authors are apparently being shunned with increasing venom.

Overseas authors enjoy massive media and in-store promotion, making the sales to local fantasy readers a sure thing, while this branch of Exclusive Books refuses to display this local fantasy novel on their shelves. Are we encouraging the export of revenue to the UK with huge marketing campaigns for foreign books, while local authors languish in poverty and obscurity?

The hostile attitude of local media is already rife, making the promotion of local books increasingly difficult. Now it seems that SA bookstores have jumped on the bandwagon in their bid to undermine the efforts of local authors to gain notoriety and earn a living. How can a South African author succeed against these kinds of odds? The end result of this kind of anti local industry mindset will be the export of our talent to overseas publishers and markets, robbing South Africa of what should be a local industry.

Ironically, when these local authors gain overseas markets, the books may then be imported into South Africa, thereby increasing the drain on local industry as the revenue leaves the country for foreign shores. Any efforts to market the book locally are being brutally stifled, and now even those who find out about it cannot buy it.

Hawkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15877218067873756705noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6991839269979152000.post-20321964850896071832007-08-24T04:28:00.000+02:002007-09-04T02:49:45.671+02:00Demon Lord Book Promotion

The Demon Lord promotion was a wonderful success! The venue was amazing, a lovely, cosy shop tucked away in Tokai, run by some very lovely ladies! Leather couches and coffee, tea or hot chocolate on tap, the walls lined with stacks of books. Marvelous atmosphere, hats off to the Book Shoppe's owner, Jaki! The rich chocolate cake was stunning, and enthusiasts came back for seconds and thirds. T C Southwell signed many copies and the books were flying off the shelves! Photographers took some lovely pictures, soon to be published in various papers and magazines along with articles on the promotion.

Also watch out for an article in Tabletalk by Pam Fourie, who interviewed the author, also with a lovely picture and some examples of T C Southwell's illustrations.

But back to the promotion. A reading was given of the final cataclysmic scene of Demon Lord by Nerine Dorman, whose rendition really brought the author's wonderful description of the destruction of the seventh and final ward to life. Also on display some new original posters of characters from Demon Lord by the author. Stunning! Everyone had a wonderful time and went home richer for the experience.
